From 20-21 May, National Experts from 23 European Union countries met in Prague for a Training Seminar on the research method to be used for their national reports on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child from the perspective of children with intellectual disabilities. The seminar was led by representatives from the project partners: Inclusion Europe, Eurochild and the Faculty of Education at the Charles University, Prague as well as the project researcher.
The group of experts covers a wide spectrum of EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and the UK. The group of high caliber experts selected includes representatives from national disability and children’s rights organisations, lawyers and academics.
The research will focus on five different areas, namely:
- Inclusive education
- The family and de-institutionalization
- Health care
- The promotion and participation of children
- Abuse
For each of the different areas, the National Experts will conduct qualitative and quantitative research. This will involve research on the national and alternative reports on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as interviews with children with intellectual disabilities themselves and their parents.
The national reports will be produced over the next six months. They will then be used to create a European Comparative Report to compare the situation across Europe. Following this, Policy Recommendations will be developed at EU and national level on how to improve the lives of children with intellectual disabilities throughout the EU. The research results will be launched at the European Conference on Children’s Rights in Brussels from 20 - 21 October 2011.
